Words of inspiration and gratitude from

Actors and Actresses

Hayley Powell, Actor writing to Mr Scott from the UK

I would be most grateful for the advice of someone with your experience. I began searching the internet for understanding of the difficulties of my training…I found the late Philip Seymour Hoffman and Tony Greco, and yourself.

Dear Mr. Scott, I am training at drama school in the UK (I am British) and out of the challenges I have met, I began searching the internet for understanding of the difficulties of my training.

I found the late Philip Seymour Hoffman and Tony Greco, and yourself. I appear to be in the category of having imagination and expression a plenty – my teachers have full, strong belief in my potential but that I need the discipline to be able to use this. I am finding difficulty in cantering myself, and sustaining consistency through rehearsal to performance.

Simply put, The Actors Theatre Workshop has changed my life as an artist. I attribute much of my growth, not only as an actor, but also as a person to my time spent working with Thurman E. Scott in the Master Class. I consider ATW my artistic home; I’ve always been drawn to the sense of community that it provides. I wish everyone I know could experience ATW, because it’s been a truly priceless one for me.

Simply put, The Actors Theatre Workshop has changed my life as an artist. I attribute much of my growth, not only as an actor, but also as a person to my time spent working with Thurman E. That’s one of the reasons why I consider ATW my artistic home; I’ve always been drawn to the sense of community that it provides. Dear Eileen, thank you for the wishes. The support from all over the world was such a precious help. That’s also an encouragement to support organizations that help raising and educating the kids to be more creative than destructive. That’s exactly what you do in ATW and I am proud I had a chance to be a part of it.

Dear Eileen, thank you for the wishes, I also wish you the best for 2015. As you have seen, the beginning of the year was quite a little bit tough in here, and as a journalist it was really a painful time. Nevertheless the support from all over the world was such a precious help.

That’s also an encouragement to support organizations that helps raising and educating the kids to be more creative than destructive. That’s exactly what you do in ATW and I am proud I had a chance to be a part of it. I’ll make a donation, and will talk about it around me. Say hello to the team and good luck.
Hopefully I’ll come back to see you soon, that’s kind of a big set up for me but I’ll be overwhelmed to see you all again!

Koen Muylaert, former ATW Intern writing to us from Belgium

My dearest people of the ATW! First of all, I would like to let you know that not a day goes by without me thinking about my time at ATW. I can without a doubt testify that the whole experience really was and is life changing. My parents have always taught me to try to be very respectful to everyone, and it was even more confirmed by the wonderful people I met at ATW.

My dearest people of the ATW! First of all, I would like to let you know that not a day goes by without me thinking about my time at ATW. Even after the past few years, I’m still reflecting on all the things I have learned while being in New York City. I can without a doubt testify that the whole experience really was and is life changing.

Perhaps you can still remember the piece Mr. Scott helped me write for Martin Luther King Day. I think I remember most of the words by heart. It was about my environment at home, where I didn’t have much contact with a multicultural society, and how that affected me when actually experiencing one. I think that particular aspect has deeply rooted in my efforts to interact with people. My parents have always taught me to try to be very respectful to everyone, and it was even more confirmed by the wonderful people I met at ATW and in the city. It’s a lesson I will definitely try to pass to everyone I know (or will get to know). Thank you for that!

Ilse De Rop, former ATW Intern writing to us from Belgium to express appreciation

After I came back home and started looking for a job, I realized how important it is to have good colleagues who respect and appreciate you. And I know those are very important values at ATW, respect and appreciation. I hope that one day I’ll find a job where work doesn’t really feel like work, just like at ATW.

I have been thinking about ATW… my new job really made me smile because it reminded me of the wonderful time I had at ATW.

At this internship they did not only look at your qualities, but also to your personality. There was a nice but still professional atmosphere. I would like to start by thanking the Actors Theatre Workshop for providing me this internship. I was able to gain more experience in my field and learn to be a leader. At this internship they did not only look at your qualities, but also to your personality. They find it important to improve both. I would also like to thank the rest of the interns. They made my stay so much more pleasant. Since we were working in each other’s presence every day, it was important to get along. There was a nice but still professional atmosphere.

You-Jung Choi, writing to us from South Korea about her experience as an ATW intern

At ATW, I learned how to handle a crisis by taking action and going into a difficult situation rather than just contemplating what to do. I developed social-consciousness and leadership skills while I participated in the Builders of the New World program. Working with the dedicated mentors and children from various backgrounds was an inspiration for me. The staff at ATW helped me a lot to learn how to manage situations wisely. I am thankful because I felt that I was deeply trusted and supported at ATW.

I also learned to keep a positive mindset when I am not certain of my capability to manage a situation ahead of me. The staff at ATW helped me a lot to learn how to manage situations wisely. The tasks for interns were willingly shared with volunteers and senior staff and I could concentrate on the work in which I was in charge. Mariko taught me how to work in a more organized fashion and I felt a welcoming mood from the staff meeting every time so that I could tell freely what is on my mind if there was something I felt was difficult to deal with. I am thankful because I felt that I was deeply trusted and supported at ATW.

Sybil O. Johnson, former student from 10 Session Acting Intensive workshop

Mr. Scott has touched my life in a way that no other acting teacher has. You come out of his class emotionally and mentally stronger with a self assuredness and a sense of empowerment that may have been latent going in. I am extremely thankful to have had the opportunity to study with Mr. Scott.

Though I wasn’t able to complete the 10 Session Acting Intensive with Mr. Scott (due to foot surgery), what I learned I shall carry with me for life. Mr. Scott has touched my life in a way that no other acting teacher has. He not only teaches acting skills, he teaches life skills that you can incorporate into your everyday life. Whether you’re on the stage in front of an audience or giving a presentation in the workplace, this class will enable you to perform at your optimal best.

Bahiyyah Asante, former ATW Master Class Student on how the program was life changing

I am so grateful to have found a community like ATW with such profound structure. The Master Class has helped me in many aspects in my life. As an actor I am more aware of myself, my body and others and in my personal life I have become more organized and accountable for my actions.

I am so grateful to have found a community like ATW with such profound structure. Being a student of the Master class has allowed me to truly see myself without the layers and learn how to remove the false habitual behaviors that keep me from connecting to who I truly am. The Master Class has helped me in many aspects in my life. As an actor I am more aware of myself, my body and others and in my personal life I have become more organized and accountable for my actions. I think the biggest thing I’ve learned which I didn’t find so important before is having overall awareness. I give ATW my highest recommendation for any student of theatre who is just starting on their journey as an actor or have been in the business for years. I strongly believe every student can learn something rare and worthwhile from Thurman Scott.

Michael Griffith, former ATW Master Class Student expressing deep gratitude for Thurman

Working with Thurman enabled me to discover and develop and ultimately share the most beautiful parts of who I am with the world. I laughed deeply. I cried deeply. My growth has allowed me to be fascinated and amazed by life and also to have compassion for myself along the journey. I have deep gratitude for Thurman being a powerful stand for me to be committed to myself and my continuous development as a creative human being, in service to my community and the world.

Working with Thurman enabled me to discover and develop and ultimately share the most beautiful parts of who I am with the world. I learned about drama. I learned about how important it is – for me – to be simple and direct. I was able to find out how truly valuable I am. It would be impossible, I think, to write in one paragraph the experience I had working with Thurman in the master class. Can I articulate something that represents the essence of my experience? I learned what it feels like to be present and to live truthfully. I experientially learned to see big ideas that open my mind and inspire me. And how to make choices that warm my soul, bringing to life that which can change people and the world. I was given a technique that allows my imagination to open, which liberates me. I laughed deeply. I cried deeply. I learned how to live with clarity and intention. I learned about action.

My growth has allowed me to be fascinated and amazed by life and also to have compassion for myself along the journey. I have deep gratitude for Thurman being a powerful stand for me to be committed to myself and my continuous development as a creative human being, in service to my community and the world.

Thank you.
